The Harry Potter author said she would not delete her social media posts, in which she has regularly argued that trans women are not women, to avoid being taken to court “under this ludicrous law”. The legislation creates a criminal offence of “stirring up of hatred”, expanding on a similar offence based on racist abuse that has been on the statute book for decades.

Inflation falls more than expected in boost for Sunak

Inflation fell more than expected last month, official figures show, in a boost for Rishi Sunak as he gears up for an election.

The decline in price rises was sharper than analysts’ predictions of a fall to 3.5pc and is the lowest reading since September 2021.

It also boosts hopes that the Bank of England will cut interest rates in the summer, boosting household incomes ahead of an election.

UK unveils sanctions after MPs targeted by China

Government sources believe that China, Russia and Iran have fuelled wild conspiracies surrounding the Princess of Wales.

Concern is growing in Whitehall that hostile state actors could be involved in whipping up frenzied social media attacks on the Princess. It comes as Downing Street is preparing to announce fresh sanctions on China as soon as Monday, after a wave of state-backed cyber attacks against a group of senior MPs and peers.

With just over a month to go until the local polls, soon to be followed by the general election, ministers are set to issue a rather ominous warning about the threat to British democracy from the Chinese state.

The Deputy Prime Minister said they were responsible for two malicious cyber campaigns targeting democratic institutions and parliamentarians. He said the National Cyber Security Centre had concluded that the Electoral Commission was highly likely compromised by a China state-affiliated cyber entity between 2021 and 2022.

Speaking to broadcasters this morning, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak accused China of acting in an “increasingly assertive way” abroad and insisted that “it’s right that we take measures to protect ourselves”.

But Sir Simon Clarke, the former Cabinet minister, warned that every time there is talk of a “reset” in relations with Beijing there is then “fresh evidence of malign activity”.

It may have been a beautiful start to the day in Westminster, but Rishi Sunak probably wasn’t in the sunniest mood waking up to the news that Britain’s foremost polling guru believes his chances of winning the next election are… 1 in 100.

With Labour 20 points ahead in the polls, even the most optimistic Tories would acknowledge they have a mountain to climb if they want to turn things around before the next election.

But the latest assessment from political scientist Professor Sir John Curtice will still be a tough pill to swallow.

The leading polling expert believes Sir Keir Starmer has a 99 per cent chance of winning the keys to No 10 at the next ballot, expected in the autumn.

The Dali cargo vessel, which crashed into Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge and caused it to collapse.

The loss of Baltimore’s iconic bridge this week was not just a major hit to the local economy; it was a painful emotional loss for the city’s residents.

On Tuesday morning, residents exchanged disbelieving messages and shared videos of the Dali, a 948ft container ship, smashing into the Francis Scott Key Bridge that covers the mouth of Baltimore harbour.

The footage, described by the mayor as “like something from an action movie”, shows the 1.6-mile bridge collapse in less than 30 seconds after being struck by the Dali – bringing to an end its 48-year life as a Baltimore landmark.

A joint effort of several authors who do find that nobody can keep standing at the side and that “Everyone" must care about what is going on in today’s world. We are a bunch of people who do not mind that somebody has a totally different idea but is willing to share the ideas with others and to be Active and willing to let others understand how "today’s decisions will influence the future”. Therefore we would love to see many others to "Act today".
