Since the beginning of the year, around 1,000 migrants have landed on the island, with many of them departing from Tobruk on the Libyan coast.
It is an influx that Gavdos is totally unprepared for. There are no facilities for the migrants – no reception centre, no soup kitchen, no NGOs.
Unlike Aegean islands like Lesbos and Samos, which have been dealing with the arrival of thousands of migrants for years, there are no personnel from the Red Cross or Medecins Sans Frontieres.

UK unveils sanctions after MPs targeted by China
Government sources believe that China, Russia and Iran have fuelled wild conspiracies surrounding the Princess of Wales.
With just over a month to go until the local polls, soon to be followed by the general election, ministers are set to issue a rather ominous warning about the threat to British democracy from the Chinese state.
The Deputy Prime Minister said they were responsible for two malicious cyber campaigns targeting democratic institutions and parliamentarians. He said the National Cyber Security Centre had concluded that the Electoral Commission was highly likely compromised by a China state-affiliated cyber entity between 2021 and 2022.
Speaking to broadcasters this morning, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak accused China of acting in an “increasingly assertive way” abroad and insisted that “it’s right that we take measures to protect ourselves”.
But Sir Simon Clarke, the former Cabinet minister, warned that every time there is talk of a “reset” in relations with Beijing there is then “fresh evidence of malign activity”.
UN Security Council demands ceasefire in Gaza
The United Nations’ Security Council has passed a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza after the United States agreed not to veto the move. For the first time since the war began, the UN’s key body demanded an end to hostilities with 14 votes in favour. The US abstained from the vote.

Record number of migrants cross Channel in first three months of year
Some 338 people were detected crossing to the UK on Tuesday, bringing the cumulative number of arrivals so far this year to the highest since the first small boats reached the UK in 2018. It comes after last week saw a record daily high for the year, when 504 migrants arrived on Wednesday in small boats.

Protesters surround police van at pro-Gaza march
Pro-Palestine protesters surrounded a police van “to prevent it leaving” after a man was arrested on suspicion of a terrorism-related offence. Dozens of demonstrators could be seen sitting in the street, while others crowded against the side of the van at the central London rally calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
A joint effort of several authors who do find that nobody can keep standing at the side and that “Everyone" must care about what is going on in today’s world.
