Event
Russians have been told repeatedly that they are engaged in an existential global conflict. But what might have looked like wild exaggeration a few weeks ago is now an increasingly credible point of view outside Russia too. Fiona Hill, until recently the senior director for European and Russian affairs on the US National Security Council, was asked last weekend if talk of a possible new world war was far-fetched. She answered bluntly:
“We’re already in it. We have been for some time.”
Such warnings should force us to look beyond the horrifying scenes in Mariupol, Bucha and countless other cities and towns that have been subjected to savage onslaught by Russian forces since the end of February and to assess wider, global perspectives — including what this means from the perspective of the UK and Europe, and indeed the rest of the world. What has happened in the last nine weeks is already having seismic consequences — whose shockwaves will grow stronger and more dangerous over the summer for those living far away from the frontlines and far away from Ukraine itself.
Comment
It is possible that World War 3 is dated as beginning on February 24th 2022 – the day Russia invaded Ukraine. As the article says there are ”seismic consequences” and ”shockwaves” reverberating around the whole world.
The Bible uses a similar theme describing events at the time of the end. These seismic events are what God calls contractions or labour pains. We know the final battle – Armageddon – will be centred on Israel and its capital city Jerusalem…but the conflict in Ukraine could easily lead to this happening. As Russia is cut off from the world economically it will be forced (with hooks in its jaws) to come out of its own land and descend into Israel to take a spoil.
Wail, for the day of the Lord is near it will come like destruction from the Almighty. Because of this, all hands will go limp, every heart will melt with fear. Terror will seize them, pain and anguish will grip them; they will writhe like a woman in labour. They will look aghast at each other, their faces aflame. (Isaiah 13:6-8 NIV)
