Not to tell people that God loves them

Dan Foster often looks at social media, trawling through Twitter looking for blog post ideas, but now and again, he finds a Tweet that leaves him breathless with righteous indignation. This is one of those Tweets:

From this, we should believe that according to Pastor Gabriel Hughes on Twitter, we ought to save our breath, because we are not pointing to the more serious problem, according to her, that those people are going to burn in hell, what we do not believe. We, as Christadelphians or Brothers in Christ, are convinced that God is the Father of all people and that the love of this God the Father, is the starting point of the Christian message.
But now Dan Foster finds himself standing corrected because he foolishly thought that the reason that we love God is that he first loved us since that’s what the Bible says in 1 John 4:19.

“We love him, because he has first loved us.” (1Jo 4:19 Calvin_Bible)

Though I do agree, there are lots of people who do not love God and even do not want to know about God. But I am convinced God still has an ear for those people and is willing to come to them if they would allow Him to do so.

The Baptist pastor in Texas Gabriel Hughes, is a lot of Anti-. He is anti-gay, anti-trans, anti-vax, anti-abortion, anti-evolution, anti-critical race theory, anti-democrats, anti-wokeism, anti-climate change, and anti-fun. You might wonder where there might still be some fun in this world and also some way of accepting those of another mind.

Foster writes:

It’s hard to find anything that Pastor Gabe isn’t against apart from interpreting the Bible literally. Gabe’s 18,000 Twitter followers lap up this kind of thing. Pastor Gabe’s recipe for a life that pleases God can be summed up in this Tweet:

Source: Twitter

When Pastor Gabe isn’t spouting stupid and simplistic lifehacks like this, he talks about his other favorite topic: Hell. {Don’t Tell People God Loves Them}

We are aware that in many traditional Christian churches damnation in hellfire is on the lips of many pastors.

To pastor Gabe, the coming wrath of God is the greatest threat that humanity faces — not COVID-19 or climate change — and we ought to spend our time and effort warning people more about Hell rather than deadly pathogens and sea-level rises (which are undoubtedly just a hoax anyway). {Don’t Tell People God Loves Them}

It is true that God has a lot of reasons to be angry at or cross with humankind. We also know that there should come some knowledge about the son of God, Jesus Christ, for those believing in him shall have the opportunity to have a non-ending (some call it ‘eternal’) life.

“”He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”” (Joh 3:36 NAS) Calvin_Bible)

“Revealed also is the wrath of God from heaven, against all the impiety and injustice of men, who unjustly suppress the truth of God;” (Ro 1:18 Calvin_Bible)

That is the reason why we concentrate on the Message of the Good News of the Gospel, which is also a Message of peace. God provide possibilities for mankind to go away from that penalty for sins. He accepted the ransom offering so that those who accept and trust this son of man and Son of God, gets in on everything, life complete and forever! When the Bible speaks about ‘eternal fire’, it talks about the fire that was kept burning outside a city, to burn the corpses, so that diseases could not spread. The Bible clearly tells us that when we die it is finished, and we shall not be able to think or feel anything. Then this would mean, there is only the darkness left over, like we saw no light before we were born. And that is also why the person who avoids and distrusts the Son is in the dark and doesn’t see life. All he experiences of God is darkness, and an angry darkness at that. (John 3:36)

We should be aware that God’s angry displeasure erupts as acts of human mistrust and wrongdoing and lying accumulate, as people try to put a shroud over truth. All through the ages, people tried to tell many lies, and certainly over God and His Works.

Dan Foster is downright annoyed. He writes

I spend my life trying to convince people that they have intrinsic worth and value because there is a God who loves them. {Don’t Tell People God Loves Them}

Yes, every person, believer or non-believer, has an intrinsic value for the Divine Creator. We would like people to think about the love of a parent. Would ever a father have a rule that when a child does not want to follow him or does not want to worship him, would be placed in a dungeon where he would have to be tortured forever? Would such a person want his own children to burn in hell, be a loving father?

Foster writes

If the love of God, expressed to us through Christ, is not compelling enough to get people to follow — if Hell is required to get people on board — then it’s not really an act of love to follow God. No, it’s a selfish act of self-preservation, isn’t it? I can get my kids to tidy their rooms by threatening to punish them, but there’s no guarantee they’ll love me if I take that approach. {Don’t Tell People God Loves Them}

Which parent would try to teach his children by making them afraid that they would be punished when they do not do as told? Creating fear to be followed is never going to succeed or getting the best results. Such a way of treating others is not exactly what one expects from a person, who would be said that he wanted company and to share his love.

Foster, the same as we do, knows that

each and every human being on the planet is made in the image of God {Don’t Tell People God Loves Them}

and from those creatures, God demands that they would love each other. In case such love would not be in God, it would be very difficult for a man to create an atmosphere of love. Though the Bible tells us that we are created in the image of God, so

 by virtue of that fact alone, they are worthy of dignity, love and respect. {Don’t Tell People God Loves Them}

Though in God’s image, it does not mean we are totally like God and can not do any harm or wrong. It is such wrongdoing that brings over us difficulties and penalties. But God is not such a cruel being as some pastors do want us to believe, that He would punish us with the most terrible punishment, having us to suffer pain from the flames of fire, which no one can extinguish.

God’s love is far greater than any man could muster, so such an idea of a God punishing with such horror does not square with the biblical record.

Even the Bible implies perfect human love and God’s love are one and the same:

“”Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Mt 5:48 NAS)

When we do have to follow the example given by God, in case God punishes His children with hellfire, then those who say so, should then probably have to do the same with their children as God does, and then would find that normal?

“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children;” (Eph 5:1 NAS)

Therefore, we better be imitators of the God of the Bible, Who in several circumstances has shown how He treats His beloved creatures. That Only One True God has proven to be a perfect heavenly Parent, worthy to follow His example…. Him not being a torturer but a blessing God.

To those who do not know God yet are to those who are wondering about life, the reason for us being here and the reasons why everything goes this way, we better show why everything goes so wrong in this world and how we can manage it to have a better life. For those who live with the fear of purgatory and hell, we better show how the God of the Bible is a goodhearted and loving Father.
