Dead do not speak

Die Toten sprechen und denken nicht

Remembering the deceased

It is not bad to regularly think of those who have died. Those who were close to us, but who have left us for good, need not disappear from our thoughts. We can think of them regularly.

Autumn is the season par excellence to think about life and death. In nature, we see the transience of things with the leaves on the trees that begin to discolour and then fall off to rot away on the ground and turn to dust, becoming food for other animals and plants again, generating new life.

With nature showing and feeling the changes, we are entering dark days again. We ourselves will once again reflect on the transition from life to death. There are many people who find it important to go to a grave or to the cemetery to commemorate their loved ones.

Those who can no longer think or speak are equal to plants and animals.

It is striking that many people think they can talk to the dead. To this we must reply in the disappointing negative. For the dead can think no more and do nothing for us. They are gone and with them, their thinking and acting have come to an end.

The Bible, the infallible Word of our Sovereign Maker  God, states clearly that with death comes an end to our life, but also an end to our abilities and possibilities. Passed away young or old, what happens to the children of men is precisely the same as what happens to animals. As one dies, so does another. All living creatures have received the same breath of life from the Creator. We humans often think we are more than plants and animals, but humans are nothing ahead of the animals, because everything is transient. Everything and everyone goes to one and the same place. Both are from the dust and no matter how they want to spin or turn it, they all return to the dust.

“in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.” (Ge 3:19 ASV)

“Thou turnest man to destruction, And sayest, Return, ye children of men.” (Ps 90:3 ASV)

“19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; and man hath no preeminence above the beasts: for all is vanity. 20 All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.” (Ec 3:19-20 ASV)

Being aware and unaware

We must be aware that as long as a person is among the living, there is still hope. As living, we can be aware of life, but also of death. For the living know that they must die, but the dead know nothing and have no reward since their memory is lost. Their loving, their hating, their striving is long gone, and they have no part, forever, in all that is done under the sun.

“13 Come now, ye that say, To-day or to-morrow we will go into this city, and spend a year there, and trade, and get gain: 14 whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. What is your life? For ye are a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” (Jas 4:13-14 ASV)

“4  For to him that is joined with all the living there is hope; for a living dog is better than a dead lion. 5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not anything, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. 6 As well their love, as their hatred and their envy, is perished long ago; neither have they any more a portion for ever in anything that is done under the sun.” (Ec 9:4-6 ASV)

Darkness, colour, celebration and enjoyment

With the autumn days, the darkness enters our lives again. Nothing prevents us from bringing some warmth into the house with some extra light, such as candles or some mood lights. It is also a time when we want to enjoy some delicacies of the wild. With joy, we can eat wild roast while drinking wine with good cheer. We must remember that for a long time it has pleased God that we would do this.

“Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God hath already accepted thy works.” (Ec 9:7 ASV)

There is no reason at all to be dressed in black. Colourful colours in our costumes should not be banned.

“Let thy garments be always white; and let not thy head lack oil.” (Ec 9:8 ASV)

Enjoy life

There is reason enough to enjoy life with the woman you love, all the days of your vain life, which God gives you under the sun; for you will see that all your vain days will soon be over; for this is your portion among the living, by the trouble you give yourself under the sun.

“Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of thy life of vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all thy days of vanity: for that is thy portion in life, and in thy labor wherein thou laborest under the sun.” (Ec 9:9 ASV)

“Behold, thou hast made my days [as] handbreadths; And my life-time is as nothing before thee: Surely every man at his best estate is altogether vanity. [[Selah” (Ps 39:5 ASV)

Nothing to do after death

The Bible also warns us that everything we have to do will have to be done in time. Whatever your hand finds to do by your power, do it while you still can. For, we must be aware that there is no work, no deliberation, no knowledge, no wisdom in the realm of the dead, where we will all end up.

“Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do [it] with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, whither thou goest.” (Ec 9:10 ASV)

Trying to talk to the dead is no use at all, for they cannot hear or see or do anything.

“[They are] dead, they shall not live; [they are] deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all remembrance of them to perish.” (Isa 26:14 ASV)
